Preparing for a Broadcast as On-Air Talent

Game preparation is one of the biggest differences between amateur and professional broadcasters. The more you know going in, the more confident and polished you’ll sound. Here’s how to prepare like a pro – even if you’re just getting started.

1. Start with Research

-Learn the names, numbers, and stats of both teams’ key players.
-Research team records, recent performances, and injuries.
-Look up background stories that can add color to your broadcast.
-Reaching out to the team’s SID (Sports Information Director) or AD (Athletic Director) could help in your research.

2. Build a Spotter Board

-Create a visual cheat sheet with player numbers, positions, key stats, and pronunciation guides.
-Highlight storylines.

3. Watch Past Games

-Watch the teams in action so you know their tempo, play styles, and habits.
-Pay attention to standout players or patterns you can reference live.

4. Prepare Talking Points

-Jot down 3-5 key stories you can sprinkle in when the action slows.

5. Rehearse Intros and Transitions

-Write out and practice your opening lines and how you’ll toss to commercial breaks or other talent.
-Time yourself so you’re not rushing or running long.

6. Show Up Early

-Get to the venue in time to test equipment, review the script or rundown, and talk with coaches or production staff.

7. Be Ready for the Unexpected

-Have filler stories and extra stats in your back pocket in case of delays, injuries, or dead air.
